Why?
I put the 6 speed in the chevelle becasue I prefer to have a manual in my "fun" cars. The 6 speed is stronger than most autos and it was my preference. It was by no means a performance upgrade except for the gas mileage increase and the strength increase. Standard transmisson cars will always have a disadvantage when it comes to straight line racing.
The jeep is a manual because that's what it came with. I honestly also prefer the standard in the jeep because it is also my "fun" car. When I do a drivetrain swap I plan to also go with a standard.
My daily car is an auto and I wouldn't choose to have it any other way.

Manual.
Period.
My first car was a K-car w/ the 3 speed torque-flite tranny.....what a pos. I'll tell the story later on that...
Manual trans IMO are easier to work on, last longer, get better fuel economy, and you get more power to the ground.

all 4 Cherokees ive had were standard. My most recent one, I regret buying a standard. I wanted an auto, but couldn't find one i liked in my price range and didnt have time to dilly dally looking for a car 1 week before I moved to Virginia.
After all the city driving Ive done, Id proably want an auto. I do a lot of city driving, and constantly on and off the clutch, shift gears, after a while it just gets annoying.
Back in CT when I lived there, once I got going, it was just long roads with no gear changes needed. Now here in Hampton, most of the driving I do is city driving. This one road I use frequently, ill be at a light, take off, hit 4th gear 45 mph and im already downshifting and slowing down for the next traffic light. Or when im on the Hampton Roads bridge tunnel and its a 3 mile backup going 5 mph, stop , go , stop , go . That shit gets old quick.
Offroad, I cant really say ive wheeled with an auto so I cant say which I like better. Although, I can imagine it might be easier with an auto, can use both feet, no need to be switching up your feet and worrying about stalling. Although with a standard offroad, you can use the the engine to slow you down.

manual. i feel like i have better control of the car for some reason. and it gives my right hand and left foot something to do when i drive. auto is nice for chillin though, when i had the neon i loved relaxing with my foot on the dash driving to the beach i still think even if you dont want manual in your car you should know how to drive one if need be.
