Hi all. Just wondering, I bought a Rancho lift kit, part number 6505. It's the proffesional rockcrawler lift that doesn't include springs. It comes with swaybar disconnects, tranny drop brackets, and an adjustable track bar. The kit was designed with 2.5 inch lift springs but my question is, can I use 4 inch springs without changing anything, or would I have to change a lot? Also, I love going offroading, but since this is my only vehicle, I would sacrifice off road ability for ride quality. I need some spring company recommendations on who has the nicest street ride. Any input?
Also, a little off topic. I have the dana 44 rear, but does anyone know if theres a website to decode the tag on it? I'd like to know what gears I have and if it's limited slip or not.

Yup, thats the kit. I've got everything in the pic minus the springs. I did get shocks from the guy as well. They are Rancho RS5000 shocks good from a 2 to 4 inch lift, so I'm all set on the shock end of it. I was probably going to put 32 inch tires on for now, but I want enough lift to be able to put on a set of 33's comfortably in case I wanted to go bigger.
I have heard good things about the OME springs. Do they offer a 3 inch or 3.5 inch spring as well? I also know that Rancho is pretty reputable, so I was considering just getting thier springs to match the kit. I'm just concerned about streetability. . (I know, I'm a wuss! Haha)
Thanks for the help so far too!

anytime you lift a jeep with short arms its going to affect its on street handling.
good springs and shocks help, i've herd great things about ome but i dont run their stuff.
i would stay with a 3 inch spring and rock a 33" tire. I think anything over 3" on a short arm is too much.
if you have a d44 rear im willing to bet you have the 3.73 gears, and thats tolerable with 33" it will be fine on the road and you will have to clutch more in rock gardens but nothing extreme. i ran around with 3.07's and 33's.
so yeah.. lol get 3" OME springs and 33" tires and call it a day

rancho's springs and shocks suck. theyre great for fullsizes, but not jeeps. the rest of their stuff is stout though. you will destroy your jeep running their springs and shocks. the ride will suck, you will have horrible balance off road- the spring rates are just too high.
i'd run the heavy OME springs which will get you about 3" of lift, but if you wanna go a bit bigger, go ahead and get the RE 3.5" springs. run the rancho shocks if you want for a while, but a bilstein, OME, or RE monotube shock will be worlds better.

OK, so I'll probably be going with the OME springs. I'll stick the rancho shocks on for now, and hopefully there ok. Oh and I did find out I do have 3.73's. Says it right on the diff tag, so thats good. Thanks everyone for the help!
Also, one more thing. If I want to get rid of the tranny drop spacers, do I just need a SYE and new driveshaft? Or is there more to it?

if you stick with 3" springs you might be able to get rid of the drop without having driveline vibrations. i would try it first b4 you go out and buy a sye and driveshaft.

I put OME 2.5" springs with 2" coil spacers, JKS front trac bar and rear trac bar relocator with RE monotube shocks and it rides great (its an unlimited though) but it does need some fine tuning (adjustable rear upper control arms possibly adj control arms all around) adj rear trac bar and extended sway bar links. Its a bit rough through bumpy turns/roads but hwy manners are very good. I think with the few mentioned mods it will ride near stock.

XJLI, do you have a part number for the heavy OME springs? I saw a picture of a jeep with 31's and the medium springs and it's too low....looks like 33's would be a TIGHT fit, haha. The guy said it raised it about 1.5 inches, even though they were rated at 2.5. I want at least a 3 inch lift and I'd rather do it all in spring, and not with spacers if I can. And by the way, AKS, love your avitar pic, haha! I gelled my hair like that for a joke one time and my buddies to this day still call me the white devil, LOL....brings back memories. Anybody ever heard of rusty's offroad and if thier springs are any good?? Looks like they have some nice stuff on thier site.

rustys springs are decent. i mean, springs are really just springs. i run rustys springs and have 0 complaints except the leaf bushing wore out in 6 months.. but you wont need to worry about that. a nice ride will come from nice shocks.
you could always do a 1" BL & 1" MML to get a bigger tire under there, plus, the bl/mml combo will allow you to runny a tummy tucker belly skid.

I think I'm gonna give the Rusty's springs a shot. I just don't have/make the money to pay 190$ per set! I'm sure the OME springs are great, but I can't afford them right now. I know a freind who has an XJ with a custom 9 inch Rusty's lift, and it rides pretty good.
Why aren't Rusty's parts that great? Thier long arm TJ upgrade kit looks pretty tempting!

33's on atj is not that hard to pull off. my last incarnation of my tj before the fire i had jks 1.25" body with a 3/4" spacer in the front with 1" of extra bumpstop. i ran 33 10.5 on 15x8 rims with 4.5" back spaceing no rubbing what soever after i adj the steering stops alittle. with the stock swaybar links i would rub the swaybar on raod while turning real hard but a set of disco's for a taller lift pushed it out of the way. i had the 1.5 high clearance rokemn gasskid and was working on the 33 engineering bellyup. after that the paln was for jks arms and longer shock mounts to maximize downtravel. what you would get with this is an awsome steet drive with as much clearnace as a guy with 4" lift and a tcase drop and awsome stability. plus as low as it sat people really underestiamted what it could do. i ran blacks at rausch with little issue
