YJ steering box is in and the jeep steers 100x better now. It should be mint once i get me WJ knuckles and such in. Was a relatively easy swap too because i only put the durango box in about a year ago. I will drill out the hole and add a sleve in it in the spring for the 4th mounting hole, for now it bolts in exactly like a stock box. side note, i compared the yj box to my durango box and they look identical except for the 4th bolt tab so no reason anyone should spend the extra bucks on a durnago box any more, just get a yj box. wut about inner bore size? that makes a difference.

My old steering box felt like i was playing a cheesy arcade racing game. It was all swooshy and was getting worse and worse. 2 weeks ago when i drove to windsor ct for the weekend i thought i was gonna die, cause the wind was really bad and every time i went to correct my steering it would take almost 30 to 50* of steering wheel movement before the wheels would actually move which would end in over steering. I know jeeps have sloppy steering, this is my 3rd xj but this was just plain bad, and i thought my old box was bad when i put this durango box in. Thats also why i want the wj steering cause it gets rid of most of the steering wheel slop that stock jeeps have because of the inverted T setup. Now there is very little side to side steering wheel slop and it handles much better, before i could hit a bump and the jeep would move from the wheels hitting it but the steering wheel would stay still. it was nasty.

Is a stock YJ box essentially the same as the Stock XJ, with the addition of an extra bolt?

No, a stock YJ box has a different internal ratio that helps turn the tires better, The piston is bigger too, the yj box is identical to a durango box plus the 4th bolt tab, but both of those are bigger than a stock xj box.

the YJ box is fixed, and the XJ box is variable.

the steering ratio in a variable rate box changes with the speed you move the wheel. move the wheel faster and the rate increases. this is so the steering isnt as "jumpy" on the highway

Nothing special here, Just ordered Raybestos brake pads and a hardware kit for a total of $35 shipped from rock auto, same aprt numbers locally would have cost over $60.
Next week comes Ford Exp sport trac rotors and lower ball joints the week after.
