i have about 1/2" of stud out, i could go less to make alignment even easier, but mah rockers push my doors up about 1/4"
just trim the studs short and use a dremel to make them into a point, doorless is friggin easy, and mine don't sag and they line up like shit, but thats because when i dent them in the middle they bow. it has nothing to do with this mod

drill/grind off the head of the pin and use a punch and hammer to knock the pin out. go to Home Guido and buy either a pin or bolt of about the right size and you are done.
