i really have no clue on how to find angles and bend them without wasting a ton of material....heres what i have for bending : one cheap ass northern tool bender(the hydraulic kind-16 ton)it came with three dies: 1.5,1.75,3.0 for some reason it seems to pinch right at the ends....why is it doing this? i know its a POS , but cant it be used for anything? or should i just chuck it? if i should just chuck it, can some body point me in the right direction for a good bender ? i would like to be able to fab up my own exo for the YJ.without having to spend 2000 for a pro bender, you know?

ive seen some decent work done with them, but dont expect any miracles. With bending tube, sometimes you have to "waste" material to get the hang of the bender. Put some marks on the tube before you bend so a "mistake" can be used as a guide. On a regular tubing bender, a certain length of tube is used for a certain angle so sometimes you have to have a test piece

I know there has to be some excess in my JD2 and I would assume all benders. Reason is that it has to go through the follower block and if your tubing isnt long enough, it pops out of the little groove that it slides in and gets pressed against the flat part of the follow. Thus creating a bend with a flat spot on the end. Ask me how I know...

what i forgot to mention, too was the rollers on the top(they move with pegs) they dont exactly look like they are round ,they seem sort of on the flat side ...is it possible they are too close and im going up too far on the jack?

what are good benders? how much?i dont have a grand to drop...can you buy them used? is it worth it?what im trying to bend is a hoop for the yj that starts from the frame goes up ,wraps around headlight, then goes in frtont of the hood to the other headlight then back down to the frame....i tried with my bender and all i did was pinch the shit out of the metal....and a nother thing should i be using HREW or DOM for this, i know its kind of a rhetorical question but does it really matter? and i do know that if you use HREW you are supposed to bend with the seam on the inside of the bend, i know about that much...

Yeah, the JD2 is a good bender. However, it does add up once you start buying dies and if you decide to put a hydraulic ram on it (which Im glad I did). I think that if you can get one used at a good price do it. It might not be the most cost effective to buy one if you are going to use it for just a few bends. As far as choice of material, a grill hoop would be good (in my opinion) with 1.5" HREW or CREW.

i used a jd squared model 4 i think, but one of my firends has that one and its pretty decent. You need to buy a die for the size tubing you want to bend. If you use the long handle to bend manually, you have to bolt the bender to the floor.
I see your in meridan, I have a shop in durham if you want to come check out the bender im there a lot 203 444 7910 give me a call

I used the Harbor Freight bender(same as the northern tool to build my first bumper, rock rails and Rear tire carrier. You have to account for cut off in your design. I do the same thing with my JD2 model 3. I can add cut off to the design in my Bend tech pro.
