Well my rear TJ 44 is a 9 bolt (not a 10 anymore) and its almost an 8 bolt now.
after wheeling last weekend my diff has been leaking a lot. so i pull the cover to re-seal it but this time she wont seal. Its just too thin.
ANYWAYS, i dont want to buy a new axle for this thing so i want to bend and weld a steel plate under the lip as to ad material to make a seal and also make it like a mini wear strip to prevent future damage.
anyone here weld to cast steel? I have access to a kick ass tig/stick machine so i was going to tig it.. is this a good idea? Or should i use stick? What rod?
if anyone has done this b4 i would love to see some pics of what you did to add a skid under the housing. any tips for welding would be great too.

PICS! I'd have much better idea on how to help if I could see it. I just drove by your house an hour ago too going to smiths. As for welding to cast it's do-able, not sure the best way.

High Nickel Rod if you are going to arc/TIG it. Pre heat the housing, weld it, peen it as you go and drop in a large pile of sand to let it cool slowly.
I don't arc and I do weld cast. This is just from what I have read.

I TIG welded Pete's manifold and I chased cracks as it cooled. I would do it again with pre heat and use NI99 rod.

preheat the cast to about 450 degrees. You dont need to use a high nickel content rod but it may help (nickel dont shrink much, helping keep the weld from cracking).
