The Toyota is getting a little love after a winter of daily driver duties and a few wheeling trips! I was surprised the other day when I had a few non Toyota off road enthusiasts in my garage and there were fairly clueless as to how a Toyota front axle was put together and what the heck a birfield was. So I thought I would do a bit of a thread to get some people up to speed on these durable little axles as my front goes under the knife for some upgrades and reinforcement including an ARB air locker, knuckle gussets, Longfields, and a shaved drain plug. This is a shot of the axle about a 1.5 years ago when I did my SAS and how it looks today..... ugh Brake dust shield carnage! I did not take any pictures of the tear down as I was in a rush to get the 3rd member shipped out for the ARB install. It took less the 2hrs to get everything pulled apart! Here is the knuckle less spindle and hub Time to clearance for some upgraded birfields. These are made by Longfield out of 300M cromoly, they have 30 spline inner axles and are stronger the Dana 60 axles and joints, did I mention that they can turn up to 40 degrees! factory on left, Longfield on right

Got some more work done.... The knuckles are held on top and bottom with 4 studs, the bottom has a cap, top has the steering arm. They have shaft that ride in the trunion bearings which the whole knuckle turn on. Shims between the steering arms and knuckle set bearing load. Cone washers center everything up below the nuts. Theses steering arm studs are a bit of a weak point with large tires and lockers, they tend to loosen up, under the extra steering load, and pull out. Frequent pretrip checks, or upgraded studs and prevent failure. Time to beef things up, these gussets keep the knuckle ball from bending under the weight of heavy tires, they also serve as upper shock mounts. I'll take my time stitch welding to prevent any warping of the housing. The fj62 hangs in the welding smoke one bay over... shes getting daily drive duties as the truck get some love!

ok... so I promise to update this with pics in the next few days.
Axle back together, ARB installed, back on 4 tires, body lift has been downsized!
Left to do, reinstall rad and intercooler, rebuild busted front bumper, swap out rear springs, find room for and air compressor!
