the 89 XJ.
when i got it on the street, i hit the gas, and it just stuck and it scared the crap out of me, i had to pump it hard for it to let go, it isnt the actual pedal sticking, its the cable as far as i can tell. I lubed and cleaned and sprayed it down as much as i could with no difference. what can i do about a sticky accelerator? this is not something i want on the road with it.

I would narrow it down to the cable first, and not a sticking throttle body just to be safe. Id say remove the throttle cable at the throttle body and then open the butterfly to see if its sticking. Doubt it, but it only takes one minute to check. Also double check if there are return springs. If it is in fact the cable, replace it and be worry free.

Pour a ton of PB blaster all over it, dont forget to spray about 1/2 a can of it into the throttle body as well, that should fix it.

Clean the throttle plate and the bore. Then replace the throttle cable. Its most likely the cable being frayed in the cover.

happened to me, could be carbon build up on the throttle body, a little fuel injector cleaner and a wire brush while its running will help, if not just get another spring and attach it to the throttle linkage and so that it pulls it closed evertime.
