i swear i read on this website somewhere a link that showed how someone attached a cable to the vacuum contraption. i know i saw it but i cannot find it on the site. i pretty much know how i would go about it but its nice to see someone else's work too.

I did it, it sucks dicks. Not only is it borderline impossible to seal, but you need a locking shifter (like the $200 'posi cable' from quadratec) to keep the linkage engaged. I still have it set up on my 30, it kept popping out and i had to physically hold the shifter in place to stay in 4wd. Instead I took out the assembly, moved the slider into the 4wd position, where it is over both axles, and put the fork back on in the 2wd position. This way it forces the slider to stay over the 2 axles basically giving you the same affect as a solid axle, but your ds will always spin this way unless you get locking/unlocking hubs. Works great for me, a guy who drives his jeep once a week to a wheeling spot, but I duno if I would want it on my DD. It would be tollerable if your front ds is well balanced I guess.

I guess that post was useless to you if you still wanna try it, heres a quick how to with what I would have done differently:
Parts (all can be found at a local bike shop): - Bike friction shifter that you can lock - 6ish feet of STIFF Cable Housing - 2 housing ends (feruels in bike world) - cable for a rear derailer on a bike - Barrel ajuster - Cable locker - 3" roughly spring
Instructions: - Drill a hole for the barrel adjuster on the opposite side of the vaccum assembly - drill a small hole through the shift fork for the cable to go through - drill a hole in your firewall where you see fit - with the shifter inside the cab of the jeep, pushing the cable through the housing, and then the housing through the hole you drilled in the firewall - screw the barrel adjuster into the shift fork assembly - remove the 2 c clips surrounding the shift fork on the rod to make the shift fork slide on the rod rather than move the entire rod and fight the vaccum - place the spring between the hole you drille don the casing, and the hole you drilled in the shift fork - route the cable through the spring and through the shift fork - get all slack out of the cable and make sure the bike shifter is in the position with the cable pushed as far out as possible - crimp the cable with the cable lock as close to the shift fork as possible - test it with the bike shifter, make sure the shift fork moves back and forth when you shift, if not the cable tension needs to be adjusted - once it moves place the assembly back on your axle, and silicone the SHIT out of the hole you drilled for the barrel adjuster and where the housing goe sinto the barrel adjuster - test, if it doesnt engage you likely need to have the shift fork in kind of a half on half off position because the bike shifter isnt pulling the cable enough
this worked for me, but like I said the little perma 4x4 mod with the shift fork worked fine for my purposes and doesnt create any way for water to get in.

what is the purpose of the spring, wont it force the fork to push back into 4-wd. what about a choke cable for a car with a manual choke, they do not work off a return type spring, you pull the cable and it stays until you put it back in.

If you get a very, VERY stiff cable that could push the fork back into 2wd your good to go without the spring.
