The longer shaft of the front axle is in two peices. When 4wd is engaged, a vaccuum creates a pressure buildup inside the axle tube and aligns the shafts together. It becomes a one peice shaft underpressure, but while 4wd is not engaged and under normal driving conditions, both wheels may spin freely of each other and the front carrier will not spin.

the vaccum diaphragm on the axle tube shifts a fork which slides a sleeve from one shaft over the other one creating a single shaft.

why have i head that vacuum disco is not good? because they have been known to fail its just one more thing that can break and essentially leave you without 4wd

if the bubble breaks you are SOL unless yopu get a midget under your hood blowing into the vaccuum line keeping the two shafts together.

posi lock fixes the faultly motor...but even then its a little wierd sum times....

I replaced mine with TJ shafts. Held up better. Now I have a 60.
