I have a buddy that just got a 96 XJ for next to free that has some damage. He said we can swap rear axles if I want. I have the craptastic D35 and his has a 8.25 Chrysler (He said no ABS,I will have to check). Same gears I'm guessing. I haven't checked yet... Its a 4.0l with an auto so I figure its 3.55's like mine. Shouldn't take long to swap but is it worth doing? Free is free. Its a better axle but worth the effort?
Thanks for any opinions.

Just make sure of the spline count, weather it be 29 spline or 27. I was told the 27 spline is about as useful as the D35, while the 29 spline is a step under the D44. Only problem with the Crystler 8.25 is aftermarket stuff for it, there isn't a whole lot compared to the D44.

phil is right for the most part
chances are best that its a 27 spline 8.25 (pre-1997 xj), which isnt the greatest thing, mildly better than a d35, if anything the housing is much better. all depends on what you plan to do with it, and yeah its gonna have 3.55s
benefit to work factor it may not be worth the time IMO

I was actually planning on an LSD 8.8 swap with discs. I know the width is an issue.

width isnt that big a deal, not much at all, any less backspaced wheels or spacers would solve that,
if youre doin an 8.8 just wait on that, 27 spline 8.25 aint worth the time

Oh boy , here we go with c clip axles again. Get a 44, the 8.8 is just a pain in the ass everyway you look at it. From making new spring perches and shock mounts, to the flange yoke bullsh*t and the width issue, it's a waste of time. You know why...........IT'S C CLIPPED BY NATURE!!!!!!!!! Also it's more expensive to build. "Oh but some have disc brakes" ......FU*K THAT! " And the tubes are a tiny bit bigger" ........BLOW ME!
Sorry to vent.

yea 8.8's are a bit harder to set up at the beginning, but its a larger ring gear, bigger tubes, disk brakes, and for an extra $500 u can make it as strong as a d60

well if you decide to jsut toss teh 8 1/4 in there since its free i have a spare set of shafts that you can have. also it is plenty stong for smaller size tires i ran the crap out of mine on 32's. even broke a driveshaft but the axle held up fine.
