I have a 3" lift with 31"s on my 95 XJ. I was told while doing the lift to omit the rear sway bar. I had no issues fitting it in so its still in there. The front bar is on drop brackets that came with the Crap country kit I bought. I thought my wife would drive the jeep more often so I figured I should leave the bars in. She never drives it and I would like to start going offroad on a regular basis. Should I remove the rear bar? Should I quick disconnect the front? or remove it totally. Its not a daily driver. I only drive it 2 miles a day to pick my kid up from day care at low speeds.
All in all will removing the bars make that much difference on the trail? The truck is not that high and I don't want to tackle any obsticles that are out of my vehicles range. Opinions are all welcomed.
Thanks David

I have no sway bars at all, even for street driving.. my jeep seems to ride stable enough for me @ 75mph to need need one.. But either way ditch the rear, it doesnt really seem to do anything except limit flex.. so.. ditch the rear for sure.. Take the front off and drive around a bit and see how comfortable YOU feel.. Personally i feel safe in my jeep with 10lbs in the tires and sways bars doing 80 on the highway.. But thats just me

I am going to just remove the rear and make some disconnects for the front. I figure some tubing, cut off wheel, bar pin clips and a drill and I'm in business.

ill give you a no-nonsense answer here
Get rid of the rear swaybar, throw it off a cliff, burn it at the stake, melt it down, and make a nice piece of furniture or something out of it. All it does is: Nothing. Some cherokees with a certain package came from the factory completly lacking a rear swaybar.
As for the front, thats all up to preference. I've driven my jeep without even thinkin about it since june of 2005 with no swaybars whatsoever and ive never wished i had it in there. Some people will disagree with that and say its ridiculous blah blah, its really all opinion. Disconnect yours and see how you like it.
As for on the trail? Definitely disconnect the swaybars, theres no way around that.

ditch em both. the leafs in the rear do a great job of controlling side to side movement of the body. and as for the front. its not that unstable either in the 3 years ive had my tj i ran the front swaybar for maybe 6 month (though i now have an antirock which i would suggest to anyone with coils up front) and even in my swb (no more swb) jeep it was still incredibly stable. even for doing donuts in the snow haha

I usually put the front sway bars on when the jeep goes onto the lift. It isnt a pleasent sight seeing your front axle hanging 5 feet in the air supported by the shortarms and shocks. Swaybars on the lift just make things easier when working on it.
Other then that they are useless.

no sway bars for the last 25k on my jeep 20k of it was with 3" lift and 32's. the last 5 k have been with rk long arms 5.5" lift and 35's. its no real issue if you just know how to drive. i have had to pull evasive manuvers involving deer in the middle of the road while going 40ish mph down hill with 10 psi in my tires and im still here.

I will remove the rear this weekend and check out making discos for the front. I am getting some steel tomorrow to make some rock rails. They lock very simple to make by the pictures. I won a cheap CB on Ebay, so hopefully by the spring I will be ready to do some events. I am going to go a bit taller too. 4.5 lift and some 33's I think. I will see how the funds are.

I figure I should armor the old girl up due to lack of ground clearance. Then some routine maintenance and she will hit the trails. I am hoping to do some wheeling before the end of winter.

Personally, I dont really like the feel of no sway bar. But thats just me.
I took out the rear, and literally, I havent noticed any difference on the road.
Offroad, its nice, because the back can go another like 2" before maxing out now.
I just like using the JKS quick discos.

I just like using the JKS quick discos. Until you lose a pin in the dirt ;D anyway. i have been swaybarless for almost a year now. it might take a couple days to get used to, but i have grown to like how the jeep handles with no swaybars. But definately toss the rear one, if you can bend it by hand just how much will it keep a 3000+ lb vehicle from swaying?

your sway bar links cost almost as much as your tires?

dont need swaybars with leaf springs.
s i m p l e
however without the front swaybar on your xj will feel like granpa's 1965 buick.
good for off road, bad for on road. I dont ever have the front connected, and it truely feels dangerous. In fact If I got cut off on the highway at the wrong time im 99% sure I would die.
