First of all specs. 1998 Xj RE 5.5" lift, stock steering 33" bfg at's.
I have a clunk and grind from my steering. i check the steering while my dad rocked the wheel and i ruled out the tie rod ends, ball joints, RE trac bar and super flex joint, and i dont think its the gear box either. While rocking the wheel the sound seems to be coming from the steerign shaft at the fire wall? you can hear it best either from under the dash or right by the master cylinder. but there is no obvious movement in the steering shaft and all the other steering components have their typical movement/play. I am confused.
It make the noise if I am stopped and rocking the wheel or if i hit a bump or if i turn while moving. At first it sounded and felt jus tlike when the rustys trac bar on my old xj went but my RE trac bar is in fine shape.
I do have plans for the winter/spring that include the following hopefuly all at once.
JCR 1 ton steerig, RE drop Pitman Arm, Durango Steering box swap, C rok inner Steering brace, HD stabalizer, and if its the problem a HD steering shaft and yet another allignment.
If it is indeed the steering shaft who makes a reasonably priced and well made shaft or is a new stock shaft good enough?
HELP this is driving me nuts.

What model Track bar is it? the re 1600 is trash and never ever worked right for me. Not even brand new. The 1610 is great though. Usualy griding is an indication of gears (check the steering box for slop (jack it up and have someone turn the wheel and see if its still there with no stress on the front end) In the steering shaft is a stupid little ujoint on xjs that are a pain in the ass. Thats usually what goes on them, and you have to replace the whole unit i belive. check all your wheel bearings and hubs too. Also it sounds stupid but ive seen it Make sure your caliper bolts are on good and tight.

start with the drop pitman arm and see if you still have issues, doubt you will though. if so, adjustable track bar.
