so my buddies jimmy shit the bed the other day..we parked it and when we came back to it tried to leave but we couldnt get it out park. everytime you hit the button on the shifter to try to shift you hear a clicking going on from the top of the steering column it sounds like. we can drive it but we have to manually shift the transmission from the transmission itself under the truck. does anybody have any suggestions on how to fix this? its a 1997 gmc jimmy

The switch on the brake pedal will cause that to happen or the locking solenoid. Take the column or center console apart(where ever the shifter is) and remove the solenoid.

Jimmy's are pieces of shit and simple things cause them to break... I think the 4wd switch and actuator also breaks a lot too.. check that out

if it like the full size Chevy trucks They have 2 lock outs one is for the key being on and one for the brake. That way you cannot take it out of park without both the key on and the brake on.
I've seen them go a few times the solenoid is attached to a linkage in the steering column just reach up under the steering column (listen for the clicking when you step on the brake) and just pop the linkage off with a screw driver it only takes a second once you know where it is. Now you should be able to put it into gear without stepping on the brake but the key should still lock it out.
Good luck
