my friends yj has been having trouble starting......it runs fine once started. but it takes like 3 minutes of cranking to get it to turn over. im kinda stumped. im thinkin its something with the ignition system but that would mean it wouldnt run right once started i would think. so i dunno. if you have any answers let me know

3 mins of straight cranking would kill a battery. 1 minute would probably kill a battery. How long for sure? Check what the fuel pressure is doing?

seriously it was prob at least a minute of cranking prob more. i think its a 94 and it has a 4.0

Fuel, spark or compression. Pick one. I would go with fuel. Like Corey stated. Check the fuel pressure. 94 4.0 should be 39 at the rail if memory serves.

alright that was my next guess cause i know it has compression cause it runs fine, and there has to be spark for it to run....ill check fuel pressure. gotta get a gauge........would it be a bad pump? start with a fuel filter? what would explain it only doing it when its cold

iac perhaps? does he step on the gas when he tries to start it?
next time he starts it have him give it a little throttle and see if it starts.

I know what you speak of and trust me part throttle works. Full throttle or Wide open throttle (WOT) sends a signal to the injectors to not open i believe

i know it does that on some of the newer diesel like the ford 6.0, i didnt know it did that for gas motors too. and yea we were tapping the throttle and puttin it to the floor half throttle, everything haha.
would low fuel pressure make it not run right once its started?

If it was low enough absolutely. Fuel injection relies on the pump making pressure.
