Does anyone else have a transfer case that intermitently doesnt engage back to 2wd right away after being on 4H or 4L?? I put it in neutral when ever i shift it.

sounds like a linkage issue. Mine tends to not want to shift all the time and i know my linkage is off.

I remember hearing something about the t-case doesnt like to go directly back into 2wd. If you put it in reverse and back up a couple inches, then into drive it switches to 2wd. It used to happen in my old xj.

if i put it in 4 low, and then try to put it back into 2wd, you have to drive a few feet before the 2 wd kicks in

Mine will tend to do the same thing from 4Lo to 2wd. If I put the tranny in neutral then from 4Lo to 4Hi, drive a few feet then put the tranny back in neutral, then 2wd its fine.

HA! with my 242 I have to go into neutral and roll for a while until it comes out. reverse too. I've just accepted it as "a jeep thing."

depending on how screwed up my crossmember is, sometimes it takes a couple hundred feet of street driving for it to pop out

My girlfriends cheorkee will do this when coming out of 4Hi to 2Hi and I can hear the shaft still spinning for sometimes up to a mile before I hear and feel a good thud, then I know it's back to 2wd

on the NP231 to engage 4wd the lever/linkage forces the fork over the put the dog in 4wd when you come out of 4wd the lever/linkage just moves out of the way a spring forces the fork out of 4wd. So if there is load binding between your front and rear axle the friction will hold the dog/fork in place until the spring can over come it, a quick reversal should do the trick. Neutral doesn't always release the force binding between the front axle and the rear.
The binding between front and rear will always be there why do you think it is so hard to drive 4wd on dry pavement.
Think of at as driving a standard and trying to force it out of gear while accelerating you cannot do it. if you hold a little tension on the stick kind of like a spring as soon as the the engine to the rear wheel speed match it will pop right out of gear even without the clutch.
Hope this helps.
So the answer is there is nothing wrong just one of the issues of using a part time T-case.

when going back into 2 wheel I'll through it into neut shift to 2 wheel, back int o drive, back into neut, listen for the click then I'm good to go, back into drive and rubber burning mode. This works almost every time, sometimes I'll do the reverse trick, sometime if just shifting from 4 hi or full time I'll do it while in gear, lot off the throttle and listen for the click which usually works
