I've got an opportunity to buy a grand 5.2 limited with a blown tranny for 5-600 bucks. I figured i would pull the motor and swap into my cherokee then maybe part out the rest along with my 4.0, or use it to make the grand into a beater. What exactly would be required to do the swap?
I can do the general wrenching like lift kits and stuff like that but im not to set on doing a motor swap like this so i planned on handing it over to Extreme Vehicle Builders in Danbury where my buddy works and hopefully get a fairly good price on it. The motor has a lot of miles but runs strong so i figured they could also check out the motor too. So pretty much what would be needed to do the swap and a rough estimate on how much the cost would be?

You will need the 5.2 ECU, wiring harness, motor mounts?, etc. I think it would be easier and less time consuming to throw a transmission in the ZJ and sell it for $$$ or use it as your beater/trail rig.

I've already invested quite a bit into my cherokee so i wanna keep that my dedicated rig, im not really interested in building a grand, ill most likely part it out and sell my 4.0. Plus im going to losing my license for a while and ill be in the Navy within the next couple months so i wont be needing a car anytime soon.
My main concern was would the 5.2 bolt directly up to the AW4 or would i need some kind of adaptor or whatever. The 5.2 ECU and wiring harnesses should still be there and ill probably buy some better motor mounts.
I have a mint 5.2 right now with 100k miles for my dd so when i lose my license ill be selling that for hopefully 3500 bucks minimum and that will pay for the swap.

You have to ask yourself... Does swapping another motor into a cherokee, which already has a great motor, really make it that much better? I'm all for modding Jeeps, but the 4.0 block is just something that doesn't need to be touched or replaced. IMO.

To answer your question, no the 5.2 will not bolt up to an AW4.

OMG such a good idea. engine swap do it
I think it is a terrible idea. That engine is not worth the effort to swap. My 4.0 2dr stock is faster than a 5.2 zj stock. No performance gains and that engine isnt anything amazing anyways. If you do a swap, swap in something worth the effort.

i dont think it is worth the effort either. i would rather have the 4.0 than the 5.2

I think advanced adapters might sell a bell housing adapter for the tranny. Even with the 318 5.2L motor being one of the best Chrysler came out with, the gains, IF ANY, over the 4.0 are not worth it IMO.

my friend is putting a 5.2 in a yj right now. its neat, but its taking him forever. he sent the stock dash back harness and the stock 5.2 harness to a company to make a custom one .. $700. and thats cheep, sucks to do yourself. he had to get motor mounts, he has a nv4500 trany behind it and a d300 behind that. so a custom cross member had to be made. never mind the adapters that had to be purchased .
my opinion, not worth the time and money for the motor. if i ever have to do one for myself i would do a chevy 5.3l aluminum block.

You'd be better off with a turbo kit. Mine is going to be for sale. :brows:

swapping a 5.2 into a cherokee to replace a 4.0 is like swapping an aluminum zj44 into cherokee replacing a real dana44.
yea it's different, but you gain so little and lose a little strength/reliability.
not to mention the giant headache you need to go through while figuring out the computer and electrical issues.

I knew the 5.2 wouldnt be a hell of a lot better than the 4.0, it was just kindof an idea to have something a little different to spend my money on. But im not sure how much money im going to have so im not sure im gonna go through with the swap.
Im thinking i might want to spend my money elsewhere on dialing in my susp. and axles exactly how i want them and maybe building a 4.7 stroker. Does anybody know how deep i would be in money wise to build a stroker if i had a 4x4 shop do it for me?
