rig stalls. and wont start back up for at least an hour randomly, while repeatedly cranking it trying to get it started. sometimes i can get it started. some times the battery dies before it kicks over. either way during crank it reaks of gas. like straight gas. so me and fred finally get it running. it idles haggardly then fred looks underneath real quick cause something caught his eye. and sure enough the cat was glowing red and throwing a good 6 feet of flames.......now i think the cat is destroyed and plugged causing to much back pressure not letting my car start. but on the cat is this metal pipe that connected to it. not threaded in or anything. its just part of the cat. the line runs up towards the motor.....does anyone know what that line is for???........phil?? do i have to replace it with an oem? is that line important???

I never actually looked at the cc on my jeep...I'll look at it today.
I had problems with it started the other day. I eventually found if I give it gas while cranking it starts.
Jeeps suck.

I believe the line to the cat is used to help get rid of the NOx exiting the vehicle. The cat was blowing flames because of all the gas you were pumping in and letting exit the combustion chamber unburned. And that cat is pretty much done.

You guys with carburetors know that you are suppose to give it one full pump before cold start to set the choke.

Don't buy a new carb. 90% of "carburetor problems" are not carburetor problems.
It sounds like your flooding it up, giving it too many pumps or something. Hold your foot to the floor if you smell gas and don't touch it. Everytime you pump it the accelerator pump squirts another tablespoon or so of gas.

Like Corey said. If you start flooding it hold it to the floor. The cat glows because of all the unburned fuel. With that said, check the timing.
