i have a spare 4.0 from a 99 n my garage that im planning on building up a little bit before i put it in my jeep. As of now my plans include a better cam with longer duration and more lift, port matching the head to the intake/exhaust, and shaving some off of the head. I need suggestions for a cam and how much would be safe to take off the head? If anyone has any suggestions or any helpful information post up. thanks alot

just throwing it out there. slap a 4.2 crank in there and make it a stroker. dont have to bore it out at all....i may do this with my spare engine.

Do roller rockers too.

roller rockers are pointless for a rock crawler. they are good for strength and durability but wont do anything for performance.

you will have a jeep with more engine mods than adam nevar. roller rockers will increase engine response and also lubricate the top end better.

Internal engine builds are nice but you will also need to think about engine management and air delivery to make the most of those changes. Since you are OBDII you could use a Unichip piggy back that is fuel and ignition adjustable to make changes. A guy with a 4.0 XJ just had his tuned on the dyno at J and M. He had all the work you have described plus a bigger TB, header and some after market exhaust.
His results after spending all that money would make you put a gun in your mouth. lol. The numbers weren't much better than most stockers. A few hp and a few ft/lbs if I remember correctly.

So then what needs to be done to make good improvements on a 4.0? Stroker?

Stroker would be a good start but for the money I would do some sort of forced induction.
