Well, the story goes. . . .I know this kid that had a 2000 XJ lifted with 33's. He is an automotive moron, and didn't take care of it too well. One day, it overheated, and he drove it about 20 miles hotter than it was supposed to be.
I ended up buying it off him for 600$.....well worth it in my opinion. Now heres where the fun starts. There was about 5 inches ABOVE the oil level mark on the dipstick of nice milky oil. I pulled the head off the motor ( HUGE pain in the ass) and it looks like the block is ok....no cracks on the cylinder walls or anything. Havn't looked really close at the head yet, but it looks ok too. I am assuming it's just the head gasket itself, but I am a chavy guy, and these jeep motors are new to me.
My question to you jeep techs is are there any spots I should be looking for that are more prone to cracking from overheating? Also, are jeep 4.0's known to crack blocks, or are they pretty tough? I would just hate to put on a new gasket, get it all back together, and have it blow white smoke out the tailpipe again. Also, not sure if this helps, but the # 1, 5, and 6 pistons were black on top, but the # 2, 3, and 4 pistons were clean, like those were the cylinders getting the coolant.

Send the head out to be checked. It will be well worth the money.

If there is no visible damage to the block then you'll probably be ok. Send the head out to be decked.

.sounds like you steam cleaned 3 of your cylinders. send the head out, the smallest crack will do it.
