from personall expierence and also becuase i worked at a bike shop selling cannondales i would highly recommend one they make them in hardtales softails (just a little suspension for cushion) and full suspension, i have a cannondale prophet 1000 thats 2 years old now, they are one of a few bikes still made in the united states and the prophets are still made in connecticut and tested in connecticut, they have a lifetime frame warranty and are any price 400 and up will be a good bike but yo0u get what you pay for, if you wait till end of october early november you can get the bike marked down a good bit so you can get a nicer bike for what you would spend anyways, i got my 2500 dollar bike for 1800 so you can save alot but hope this helps now that ive written a book lol

i ride a KHS.....but i built my bike myself pretty much and cost a lot of money at the time. but at first i would stay away from full susp unless you love downhill(but who doesnt). goin uphill with a full susp sucks. im sure as a beginner you prob wont really care what your riding as long as it gets you up and down the mountain haha. but a rockhopper is a good choice to start with and diamondback makes some pretty good mid-line bikes as well. your going to want a good set of shocks as well so make sure what you buy doesnt have something cheap on it. rock shox, marzocchi bomber, both good choices for shocks. there are millions of aftermarket things as well that will make the bike lighter and faster.

Cannondale sucks. I technically have a KHS as well. The frame is made by KHS but its got a different label on it. 145mm fork, variable rear from 3 to 6" of travel. But its built for DH and Free riding, i can basically lockout both suspensions or setup them up for xc trails too but for codys purposes the specialized hardrock will be a great start.

haha i raced my prophet and was untouchable in xc races with a downhill x racer so cannondale cant suck that bad and they have the best customer service but if you want to support chinese sweatshops buy any other brand

Cannondale deff has some great innovations and are very good bikes there are just some things about them that i dont personally like. i too worked at a bike shop some years ago so i saw the new stuff as it came in and the enduros/29ers/ epics really got my attention. And now i essentially ride a KHS 4 link Free ride/XC bike. Go figure.
