Anything, I dont really know anything about Mt Bike Tech. When I was younger I always just went to wal mart and got a bike and rode it til it broke. What should I look for etc etc. I want something entry level but i dont want a piece of crap.

ok.
any bike specific shop will have a worthy bike. walmart or any other department store will not.
stay away from pacific, next, mongoose
good brands are kona, ironhorse, specialized, trek, diamondback, giant, gary fisher, marin
giant will igve you the best bang for your buck. specialized is one of the best but also the most expensive. kona is cool trek is good quality, moderate pricing. marin is good quality, moderate to high pricing.
if you buy from a shop they will usually have a warranty that you will need to take advantage of. when you get a new bike and ride it, it will break in and need to be readjusted. shops will do that for free under the warranty.
what kind of trails will you be riding?

OK do you want full suspension or hard tail (front susp only)?
I think between Alex, myself and the rest of us we can get you on track.
Try reading up on MTBR.com and signing up in the forum. You can learn alot in there.

expect to pay 300-600 for an entry level bike that wont fall apart.

I dunno the pros and cons of hard tail and full suspension... so i do not know the answer to that. Does dicks have decent bikes? I know they have diamond bikes. As far as trails, I know there are a lot of good trails around here, i tend to do more crazy stuff in anything i do

it would be better to buy a good hardtail than a cheap soft tail.
a GOOD full sus bike IMHO should have a fully lockoutable, or almost fully lockoutable, rear shock. without it, youll kill yourself on anything except downhills and less hardcore riding. youll lose all your pedaling power in the shock. also, a cheaper (sub 8-900) full susp wont ride as nice as a nice 5-600 dollar hardtail with a nice fork.
dicks bikes are OK, they have DBacks but theyre lower end ones with 'eh' components.

gt is pretty good but i havent seen many shops stocking them. but if you can find one, they might be a good deal. adams pretty good with what hes saying but you can get a decent full suspension for 700.
youll probably be best off with an "all mountain" bike. good enough to pedal straight trails and good enough to do some drop offs/crazy stuff.
i need to catch a train, i will be back on later tonight.
no dicks. the dicks mechs really dont know what theyre doing most of the time. shop=quality.

I agree with alex, specialized is a good all around reliable brand with affordable entry level bikes. A hardrock would be a little weak IMHO a rock hopper would be a nice well equipped bike and a stump jumper would be great when you get a bit more comfortable riding. Try and stay away from dept store bikes, Dbakc is okay but not great IMHO, there are so many bike manufactures out there its impossible to name them all. Check out the forum and reviews section of MTBR.com they have great reviews on everything from entire bikes to specific parts. www.mtbr.com/
