everyone at RC this weekend saw this happen but i figured id post it up here
I'm not sure if this is a fuel pump or CPS or what it is but:
the jeep will crank for sometimes up to like 7 seconds or so, and then just slowly fire up, and then may or may not run like crap for 5-10 seconds or so. after that time though itll run and drive perfectly normal. any ideas? not sure what other specifics i can give
97xj 4.0 aw4 blah blah

hook up a obd2 scan tool to that beast. oftentimes they can pinpoint the faulty part.
i think autozone/advance does it for free, but that just might be starter/alt testing

Scanners only work if there is a check engine light on... you both have obviously never hooked up a scan tool to a vehicle with obd2. maybe autozone sucks and they can only check for things that throw off a check engine light, but that means they suck. it does a shitload more than just check the check engine light. -not all codes trigger the check engine light - a scan tool is also used for diagnosing driveability problems by allowing you to keep a close watch on things such as sensors, air/fuel ratio, engine rpm, etc.
