Id like to know more about if a fluid cooler is necessary, and if a highflow pump might be worth the extra cash once the system is in place.
also, Dana, I know people throw durango boxes into xjs, but is it as easy to do in a tj you think?

ive had that damn link bookmarked going on 2.5 years now i think....the reason i didnt do it is because those prices are out of date last i checked so the budget is kind of irrelevant in there...

West Texas Offroad has a "redneck ram" system that is pretty cheap. Okay its expensive, but compared to others its cheap. They drill out your stock steering and supply all necessary hardware.

I was going to grab a durango box and drill/tap it on my bench and take my time to get parts ect. so i dotn have the down time of taking the box out of my jeep. my friend has a home made setup on his YJ to push 38.5's and it works good. stock pump (its on a v8) and i think he uses a small trany cooler for the system. I could be wrong. il try to get specs later

i have a 6.75" psc ram chillin here right now. i got the hoses and fittings from surpluscenter.com.
in my extensive research some good things to know are:
measure your tie rod throw before you order a ram, too long and you will crack your knuckles, too short and well you will have a shit turning radius, you can limit the travel by using spacers inside the ram.
my 44's tie rod throw is right around 6.75" so i picked up the psc 6.75" unit because it required no tearing into a cheaper ram and having to modify it and that is a plus for me.
a stock steering box drilled and tapped will work, you either need to be super careful while drilling and put some sticky grease on the bit to make sure no metal fragments are in there when your done, or take it apart before drilling, unless you like blowing out pumps and gears.
i have heard conflicting arguments about running the stock pump, but I have heard it works well and I have heard it sucks, im going to add a small tranny cooler and run high end fluid with my stock pump and see how it works.
the whole kits are so expensive, because they give you a brandy new ho pump, reservoir, gear, ram, hoses, mounting kit, heims, and all sorts of stuff.
give me about a month, im getting a box this sunday and i need to pick up a couple fittings at tsc and i'll begin tearing into it.
